Why natural insulin is so important to us

Some of the FIS members tell about their experience with different kinds of insulin.

Marianne

I have had diabetes mellitus Type 1 for 32 years and can pretty much lead a normal life with natural insulin. My experiences with several types of genetech insulins were horrifying. I couldn’t feel my hypoglycaemias anymore, which was particularly a problem at night. Several times I came close to falling into a coma. It severely affected and limited my performance at work. Am I going to be forced into such a situation again? I’m just fine with natural insulin, I feel great. I urge the politicians to join us in our efforts to keep natural insulins!

Luciano

I have been a diabetic (type A) for almost 35 years. For years I always used natural insulin. In the ’90’s I had to use genetech insulin for several months because I was working abroad and natural insulin was no longer available in that country.
Well, several times during that short period I suffered severe hypoglycaemias without any of the usual warning symptoms and I had some very uncomfortable moments.
After I returned, I went back to natural insulin and did not experience such situations anymore. I am my own master.

Natural insulin is the only one for me!

Silvan

I need natural insulin!

I tried out genetech insulin for a short while and it affected my retinas, resulting in massive problems with my vision.

I can still read – but for how long?

Rolf

I have been an insulin-dependent diabetic for over fifty years, during which I was able to rely on this hormone’s dependability and stability. However, in 1982, my quality of life changed radically (and negatively) with the introduction of the new genetech insulins. I had no more warning signals when my blood sugar sank and then I was in such a bad state that I was not even capable of taking some sugar out of my pocket to alleviate the situation. A dangerous hypoglycaemia affecting the brain was the reason for my disturbed consciousness. Without natural insulin, my range of motion and action is also limited, be it on foot, on a bicycle or in the car. My license was revoked after two such incidents while driving. I would still be able to drive today if I could have remained on natural insulin.

Son of a diabetic mother, 11 years old

Mum and I are walking in town. As we cross the street, she suddenly collapses! People pull her onto the sidewalk, but then just stand and stare. I know where she keeps her dextrose tablets in her purse, so I fish them out and put some in her mouth. I shake her and call her name. She wakes up again after a while.
She has diabetes. Not too long ago she had to switch her insulin to the one they call human insulin because there’s hardly any of the other kind left. Since then, she often faints or acts very strange—she’s so different from before when she was able to use natural insulin.

Marianne

I had a very strong reaction to genetech insulin. Everything seemed to bob up and down when I stood up and tried to move. I couldn’t work anymore. The doctor suspected cerebral apoplexy but the neurological tests were negative.
I gave up my flat and my job. I thought “It’s all over now...“ because I needed constant care and it looked as though I would be chronically ill for the rest of my life. In the second phase, with natural insulin, I slowly recovered and now I’m OK. But the fear remains that I would need permanent care if I would have to switch to genetech insulin again.
